Fiber vs. cable

What actually changes when your connection is fiber

Fios runs on a fiber-optic line all the way to your home, rather than the coaxial cable most cable providers use for the last stretch. That difference shows up in a few concrete ways.

Fiber (Fios)Typical cable
Upload speedMatches your download speedUsually a fraction of download speed
Peak-hour slowdownDedicated line, minimal congestionShared neighborhood bandwidth can slow down
LatencyLow and consistentGenerally higher, more variable
Weather sensitivityNot affected by rain or heatCoax can degrade in extreme heat
Data capsNone on current Fios plansCommon on cable plans

How this site works

Who we are, and how we get paid

Fiber Discounts is an independent comparison site

We are not Verizon and we don't take orders, install service, or handle billing. When you click through to view or sign up for a Fios plan, you're taken to Verizon's own order page to complete everything directly with them.

If you sign up for service after clicking a link on this site, we may earn a referral commission from Verizon. That's how we keep this comparison free to use — it doesn't change the price you pay, and it doesn't influence which plan we describe as the best fit for a given household.

All trademarks, including Verizon and Fios, belong to their respective owners. We reference them to describe and compare their publicly available service.

Questions

Common questions before you switch

Answers to what we're asked most, plus the number to call for pricing and availability.

Fios runs on physical fiber lines, so availability depends entirely on whether that line has been built to your address. Coverage is concentrated in parts of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Call (855) 382-8483 and we can help you check whether Fios is available at your address.
Fios internet is currently offered without a required annual contract, though promotional pricing is often tied to enrolling in Auto Pay and paperless billing. Confirm the exact terms shown on the order page, since offers do change.
You can typically keep your existing service active until your Fios installation is complete, then cancel with your current provider. Ask about early termination fees before you cancel — some providers charge a fee for leaving mid-contract, and Verizon sometimes offers a credit toward that cost during sign-up.
Most installs are scheduled within seven to ten days of ordering, though this varies by location and whether fiber is already run to your building. Apartment and multi-unit buildings sometimes install faster if the building is already wired for Fios.
We're a comparison site, not Verizon, so we can't access your account or fix billing or service issues. For help comparing plans or checking an offer, call (855) 382-8483.
